Christmas
The wonder of wonders, that God became man, and was given for me!🎶 The almighty came down and walked among men.🎶 The wonder of wonders, he died for my sins.
The Christmas season is the most exciting time of the year with all the decorations, the hustle and bustle that comes with buying gifts, and all the Christmas candy that's made!! In one way, as a Christian looks at what Christmas has become, we can seem to get a little disappointed at what it all includes today, with all the Christmas lights, the tree, and all the cards and gifts!...It seems as though the reason for the season is forgotten sometimes. Although for Christians, we do celebrate Christmas as the anniversary of Christ's birth while others may just view it as a cultural celebration that includes gift giving, waiting for Santa Clause, and decorating a tree!
In my own words, here are some facts of Christmas in it's beginning.
Christmas was not actually viewed as a holiday until 1870. The first Christmas cards started print in 1850 with a family scene printed on the card. Along with the cards, came the Christmas tree. In 1832 a New Englander identified the evergreen tree. She had 'little doubt' that the Christmas tree would 'become one of the most flourishing exotics of New England'. Actually it was not only them, but the Americans also fell in love with the German custom and by 1850 had adopted the 'Christmas Tree'.
So I gathered, from the article I learned this from, that in the beginning of this holiday, the Christians viewed it as the anniversary of Christ's births. Non-christians actually didn't associate His birth with the holiday. While the pace of life was increasing for them it was a day to spend at home around the hearth. When nostalgia hit them and they longed for an earlier time, the holiday ministered to their needs. For us as Christians, we can also let the holiday minister to our spiritual needs as well. We can look for opportunities to glorify our Saviour at this time, and experience his peace and joy that he gives to us His children.
Wishing you a blessed Christmas!!
